Negros Occidental is one of the provinces that compose Western Visayas or Region VI.  Located in the northwestern portion of the Negros Island, it is located near the central part of the Philippine Archipelago.

Shaped like a man's boot when viewed in the map, it has a total land area of about 7,926.07 square kilometers or 792,607 hectares.  The coastline of Negros Occidental is more irregular than that of its sister province.  Negros Oriental.  The Northern and western parts are largely level plains and gently rolling slopes separated from the eastern seacoast and its neighboring province by mountain ranges of varying elevations, including a series of volcanic peaks.  The province has two pronounced seasons, the wet and the dry.  The northern monsoon prevails during the dry season, while the southwest monsoon dominates the rainy season.

The final report on population census showed that the province has a total population of 2,256,908 of which 50.88% are male and 49.12% are female.  The Ilonggo or Hiligaynon dialect is considered the principal dialect of the province, spoken by about 78.31% of the entire population of the province.

Entrance Channel Foreign and coastwise vessels usually enter the East channel south of Pulupandan in its passage to the inner harbor.  The east channel is 3 miles long and 1 mile wide.  Coastwise vessels can also enter the narrow channel north of Pandan Point with extreme care.

Foreign vessels calling at the port of Pulupandan wait and/or anchor at the pilot boarding point (Lat. 10o 28?N Long. 122o 46.5? east) before entering the channel.  

Harbor Entrance East channel for vessels coming from the south of the harbor and for coastwise vessels from the north enters narrow passage 1.1 mile north of Pandan Point.

Currents Strong at the pier and its vicinity with the flood setting north and ebb south.  The flood current is very strong during the southwest monsoon with a rate approximately from 4 to 6 knot waves.

Waves During southwest monsoon season moderate to strong waves prevail at the port, but the sea is calm during northeast monsoon but rough at the channel.

General Description Reinforced concrete pier and wharf supported by concrete piles utilized for domestic general cargoes and passengers.

Berthing Facilities Pier     -   242.12 meters in length and 21.75 meters in width

Wharf  -   178.5 meters in length with controlling depth of 3  meters

Storage Facilities Open storage and warehouses available owned by the Port Authority.

Anchorage Vessels usually anchor in 8 fathoms about 800 yards westward of the pier, in 6 fathoms slightly eastward at middle of the east channel with Nalunga Island peak bearing 270o.  The anchorage is exposed to the southwest monsoon and northern winds.
