Guangdong Airport Management Corporation, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Co., Schenker China Ltd and BAX Global have recently signed a co-operation agreement, Xinhua reports.

According to the terms of the agreement, Baiyun Airport will set up a management system to provide greater convenience to freight forwarders such as Schenker. In return, Schenker's extensive global service network will benefit the airport by bringing in more cargo.

Between 2007 and 2008, Schenker is expected to transport more than 10,000 tons of international cargo through Baiyun, which will account for about five per cent of the airport's total volume of international cargo.

Guangdong Airport Management Corporation CEO Liu Zijing said Schenker's merger with BAX Global has resulted in an annual growth of more than 50 per cent in Baiyun's cargo throughput.

South China regional general manager of BAX Global's Guangzhou branch Huang Yongzhong said the company's cargo volume has been rising at a pace of over 30 per cent annually in the recent years and the company handled about 4,000 to 5,000 tons of cargo at Baiyun Airport last year.

Schenker and BAX Global are both wholly subsidiaries of Deutsche Bahn. The China integration is expected to be complete soon after which the fully merged company will operate under the Schenker name.
