AMERICAN Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) president Kevin Burke expressed the thanks of his members to the US Congress for voting to renew the comprehensive import ban against imports from Burma for another year to bring more pressure on the ruling military junta's for human rights violations.

"The American Apparel & Footwear Association has led the clarion call for economic sanctions against the military junta ruling Burma since the inception of this legislation," said Mr Burke. "As we inch toward a more democratic world, America and the rest of the world must remain vigilant against the types of tyranny and human rights atrocities committed by the junta."

The import ban on products from Burma, a provision of the Burmese Freedom and Democracy Act of 2003, must be renewed annually by congress and the president.
