HALIFAX Stanfield International Airport has been given clearance for the international air cargo programme, which allows goods to be flown from the United States into Halifax, stored temporarily, and then sent onward to a European destination.
The international air cargo transshipment programme is also in place at Gander, Newfoundland; Moncton, New Brunswick; Toronto, Hamilton and Windsor, Ontario; Winnipeg, Manitoba; Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta and Vancouver, Abbotsford, Vancouver and Prince George, British Columbia.
Similarly, international air cargo could also arrive from overseas and then be shipped by rail or road from Halifax to the United States, reports the Halifax Chronicle Herald.
"Participation in this programme will greatly enhance Halifax Stanfield International Airport's air cargo development of the region's Atlantic Gateway strategy," said Tom Ruth, president and CEO of the Halifax International Airport Authority.
The programme enables the Canadian Transportation Agency to authorise any foreign air carrier to use the Halifax airport to transship international air cargo, even if these rights are not provided in Canada's bilateral air transport agreements.
