Puerto Cortes, on the Caribbean coast, is the only port in the Western Hemisphere and one of only three in the world scanning all inbound and outbound shipments for nuclear substances, the Caribbean Update reported.
This puts the port around four years ahead of the US congressionally mandated deadline of July 2012 requiring all inbound containers to be scanned before entry into the country. Puerto Cortes ranks 29th in the world in volume of shipments to the US.
