On 3 October, the terminal expansion at Barge Terminal Born (BTB) will officially become operational. The quay has been extended from 200 to 340 metres, the asphalted site now measures 30,000 m² and a second gantry crane has been installed. As a result, capacity has been increased to 250,000 TEU. In 2008, BTB expects to transport 120,000 TEU. This volume will increase in the coming years to 200,000 TEU. The investment amounted to € 9.5 million, almost half of which was provided by local, regional and national government.
In 2008, BTB expects to transport around 120,000 TEU, increasing in the coming years to approximately 200,000 TEU. The growth in the region is due mainly to the car plant NedCar, chemical concern Sabic and new and existing logistics service providers in the Born area. The heightened bridges and direct link with the A2 motorway (Rotterdam-Venlo-Maastricht-Liège) are also a boost for the terminal.
BTB is also developing as an extension to the seaport. In the short term, the terminal will become an “extended gate” (in Customs terms: DomProc Plaatsing = local clearance procedure) for the port of Rotterdam. This means that containers may be transported further without a customs document. For customers, this means lower costs and faster transit.
Barge Terminal Born currently has five ships operating a service with Rotterdam and Antwerp and also runs a rail service to Rotterdam three times a week.
