Bush, Hu talk product safety at APEC

Presidents Hu Jintao and George W. Bush agreed to cooperate on the product safety crisis behind closed doors at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Australia on September 6, the Financial Times reported. According to the newspaper, US officials said "a great deal of time" was spent discussing the problem during the leaders' private talks. Hu outlined product safety measures, including enhanced law enforcement and tougher inspections. The two leaders met two days after toy maker Mattel announced a third global recall of Chinese-made products. On the same day, however, Bush urged China to embrace democracy and use the Beijing Olympics to expand "openness and tolerance," in a speech attended by Hu.
