US air carrier United Airlines has announced a plan to launch a daily service from Hong Kong to Los Angeles from October 29.

The new service uses Boeing 747-400 aircraft, bringing the total of its lines from Hong Kong to 5, Logistics Week reported.

United's vice president for Pacific region Mark Schwab said the airline has different customers than those targeted by budget carriers hence there will be no direct competition between the two.

United was earlier approved by the US Department of Transportation to operate service from Guangzhou to San Francisco, which the airline plans to launch in the spring next year and will use 777 passenger aircraft. Mr Schwab said travellers from all parts of China can take code-sharing flights between United and Air China or Shanghai Airlines to Guangzhou then head directly to San Francisco.
