TAIWAN's Port of Kaohsiung is testing on a new radio frequency identification (RFID) container seal system in a bid to replace human labour in cutting down customs clearance time and costs, Logistics Week reported.

The system will be integrated with the port's existing automated gates, which has boosted the processing efficiency and traffic flows. At present, some 20,000 vehicles are processed throughput the automated gates every day.

Once up and running, the new RFID system will eliminate the necessity of using staff resources to escort cargo, replacing this with high-speed processing and a reading reliability rate of over 97 per cent.

The Port of Kaohsiung said the new system can hopefully become the first example of successful replacement of human labour and help to enhance the port's international image.
