Czech Airlines celebrates 75 years of service between Prague and Bucharest

This month, Czech Airlines celebrates the 75th anniversary of the launch of scheduled air service between Prague and the Romanian capital, Bucharest. The former Czechoslovak Airlines first flew to the destination on 11 September 1933. Presently, the Airline offers three daily flights between Prague and Bucharest, deploying its most modern Airbus A320 aircraft and Boeing 737s.

The former Czechoslovak Airlines launched service to Bucharest in the year that came at the tale end of the Great Depression. Bucharest was only the second foreign destination in Czechoslovak Airlines’ network and the flight there from Prague went via Uzhgorod and Cluj, and then on to Bucharest.

Last year, the Czech Airlines service between Prague and Bucharest was used by nearly 124,000 passengers, which constitutes a year-on-year increase of over 32 percent. Overall, Czech Airlines operated over 650 flights between Prague and Bucharest in 2007. This summer season, Czech Airlines increased the number of flights from 13 to 17 weekly.

The Czech Airlines connection between Prague and Bucharest is used primarily by business travellers, but also by Romanians travelling on to Western Europe for work. Departure times have also been set to suit business travellers from Western Europe, Scandinavia, the Baltic States, and Russia, transferring in Prague on their flights to Romania.

During the summer flight schedule, i.e., from 30 March to 25 October, Czech Airlines offers three daily flights to Bucharest, leaving Prague at 9:15, 11:40, and 21:20. From Bucharest, passengers can fly at 6:45, 12:50, and 15:15. The flight takes one hour and 55 minutes.
