U.S. Customs and Border Protection has extended its grace period before enforcing a mandate for electronic filing of Shipper's Export Declarations, an official said in a story for the Journal of Commerce Online.
A regulation requiring the use of the Census Bureau's Automated Export System and eliminating the use of paper-based export documents went into effect on July 2 and enforcement was scheduled to begin on Sept. 30.
As American Shipper first reported, however, CBP has not finalized its guidelines for how to mitigate penalties. The agency will continue to issue reminders to companies that fail to comply until the penalty guidelines are issued in the near future.
