A reminder that TEU stands for Twenty foot Equivalent United which is a standard container.
Qingdao in east China’s Shandong Province, which is the second largest external trade port in China, had a throughput of seven million TEUs from January 1 to September 30 which is more than it did during the whole of 2005.
At the same time the general cargo turnover during the same period was 200 million tonnes which was, again, an increase on the whole of 2005.
The total turnover included 56.49 million tonnes of iron ore, ranking it first worldwide.
The port expects total general cargo turnover of 260 million tonnes and container turnover of nine million TEUs for 2007.
Incidentally Qingdao has excellent sailing facilities and hosts a super beer festival.
