THE Port of Montreal reported record high traffic of 26 million tons in 2007, up 3.6 per cent on 2006.
General cargo through the port hit 12.7 million tons, up 7.6 per cent largely because of a 9.4 per cent increase in container volume to 1.3 million TEU.
"We are pleased with our performance," said Patrice Pelletier, president and chief executive officer of the Montreal Port Authority. "My team and I are now focused on finding innovative and proactive ways to accelerate growth, and we anticipate that containers will be the cornerstone of an overall strategy that helps the port remain our clients' preferred choice on the North American east coast."
The port handled 7.9 million tons of liquid bulk cargo and 5.5 million tons of dry bulk cargo.
