BIMCO, the world's largest shipping association, said Tuesday that Secretary General Carsten Melchiors has been "relieved from his duties with immediate effect."

The executive committee of the Denmark-based association has named Melchiors successor as Torben C. Skaanild, who previously held the post from 1984 to 1991. Deputy Secretary General Søren Larsen remains.

Skaanild's more than 25-year shipping career includes time at The East Asiatic Co. Ltd. and World-Wide Shipping. He is group chairman of Dynatest International A/S.

BIMCO was established in 1905 and has about 2,400 members worldwide that control a fleet of about 525 million deadweight tons, estimated to represent 65 percent of the world's merchant fleet.
