RIVER Shuttle Containers (RSC), CMA CGM's French inland waterway container shipping subsidiary that specialises in combined river/road and rail/road shipping, has taken delivery of three new barges.

The barges, the Nirvana, the Guadania and the Camael, will be operated on the company's Rhone Saone river system as demand grows for inland water transport, a CMA CGM statement said.

"These new eco-friendly vessels are self-propelled and consume 41 per cent less energy than the pushed barge convoys that they are replacing," said RSC general manager Philippe Woehrel.

In addition, the 200-TEU barges will offer three weekly departures instead of two, boosting RSC's weekly capacity to 1,200 TEU on the Fos-Lyon-Macon-Chalon line.

"Shipping by waterway is an energy saver and the most environmentally friendly way to transport cargo. Each ton switched from road to waterway cuts CO2 emissions by four times," a company statement said.

RSC is an inland waterway container shipping company that serves all of France's main river routes: the Seine, Rhone and Saone. In 2007, RSC transported 75,000 TEU for annual turnover of EUR18 million (US$27.85 million).
