Profile of the Port
The Port of Kisarazu, located in the Keiyo Coastal Industrial zone on the eastern shore of Tokyo Bay, has a long history as a distribution and trading center. In order to boost its role as an industrial port, land is being developed for industrial use and port facilities are gradually being expanded by new wharves for domestic and foreign trade. This has earned the Port of Kisarazu an important role as the mainstay of economic and social life in southern Chiba.
Nippon Steel, its affiliates and subcontractors, as well as an industrial park for lumber mills have located in the Kisarazu South and Kimitsu districts.
Tokyo Electric Power has built a thermal power plant in the Futtsu district, and Kisarazu South Wharf, a public facility, is used primarily for shipping sand produced in the area.In order to boost its role as a foreign trade port, a 240m-berth with water depth -12m was opened in 1996.
This area is steadily gaining importance as a regional development base in the southern part of the prefecture . In order to boost the role of Kisarazu Port as a foreign trade port and to redevelop the area of Kisarazu Port, the Port and Harbor Plan was revised in July 1998.
Major Public Facilities
The public wharves of the Port of Kisarazu are divided into the inner harbor, Kisarazu South and Futtsu districts. The inner harbor has a 3.0 m deep and 788 m long lighter's wharf. Kisarazu South has a 4.0 m deep and 721 m long lighter's wharf, a 4.5 m deep and 288 m long wharf (4 berths), a 5.5 m deep and 360 m long wharf (4 berths), a 7.5 m deep and 280 m long wharf (2 berths), and a 12.0 m deep and 240 m long wharf (1 berth).
The Futtsu district has a 5.5 m deep and 360 m long wharf (4 berths), and a 7.5 m deep and 260 m long wharf (2 berths, including one that is earthquake resistant).
Other port facilities include cargo handling areas (138,887 Sq.£í) and open storage areas (72,625 Sq.£í).
Port data (2005)
In 2005, the Port of Kisarazu handled 1,173 foreign trade vessels with a gross tonnage of 34,676 thousand and 23,953 domestic vessels with a gross tonnage of 11,653 thousand. Foreign trade cargo totaled 42,433 thousand tons and domestic cargo 22,323 thousand tons, adding up to 64,756 thousand tons in total.
The public wharves were used by 138 foreign trade vessels with a gross tonnage of 274 thousand and 11,104 domestic vessels with a gross tonnage of 4,621 thousand. Cargo totaled 4,319 thousand tons, including 3,249 thousand tons of gravel and sand.
