GENERAL INFORMATION The port management office of Surigao covers both provinces of Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur which include the islands of Dinagat and Siargao and other satellite islands. Within the PMO are located the baseport of Surigao, the terminal offices of Lipata in Surigao del Norte, Dapa in Siargao Island, Tandag and Bislig, Surigao del Sur, the three private wharves of Paper Industry Corp. of the Phils., Pacific Cement Company, and Marinduque Mining and Industrial Corp., Lianga Bay Logging Company, Aras-asan Timber Company, Puyat Timber Company and 82 municipal ports. As a seaport, Surigao antedates the arrival of Europeans in the Philippine Islands. In what was previously known as the province of Caraga, Surigao was already a thriving port. It received an outpouring of cargoes not only from the upstream settlements in the hinterlands and neighboring provinces, but from foreign lands, especially Chinese and Japanese traders who made periodic calls at the province and bartered with the natives. If any body of water in the country can lay claim to being the gateway of discovery, it is Surigao Strait. It was through this narrow passage that Magellan first entered the archipelago in 1521 and dropped anchor off Surigao before going to the Visayas Island. During the 1980s the baseport of Surigao experienced substantial expansion. It became a development port, as a result of which a P69,987,446.32 IBRD project at the northern section of the quay has successfully been completed and turned over to PPA in July 1990. A 113-M quay and Ro-Ro Landing with rubberized fenders, an administration building, passenger terminal, transit shed, elevated water tank (capacity: 16 cu.m.), pump station, new lighting system and other horizontal structures are part of the entire project package. About 180 meters of RC deck has been added to existing operational quay measuring 124 meters for vessels engaged in bay and river trade. A passenger shed has been constructed in the area which caters to vessels/seacrafts plying the island routes in Siargao and Dinagat. PORT PROFILE Fairbanks Morse Scale, D.
