Located at the heart of the Pearl River Delta, Ports of Guangzhou have been playing an important role as the gateway to South China. The Ports have achieved a rapid growth for the annual throughput in the last decade. To cope with the development of local economic society, the Ports sought to undertake a number of expension projects. The biggest part are container terminal, oil & chemical terminal and roll-roll boat terminial in Nansha New Port Area, which are under construction now. Nansha Project Phase I have been put into operation in Sep. 2004 and phase II will be put into operation in Dec. 2006. Nansha Port Construction is deemed to be the new economic engine for Guangzhou City and Ports of Guangzhou.

Introduction

Port of Guangzhou is situated in the center of Pearl River Delta where waterways, highways, railways and airways conjoining in Metro Guangzhou, forming a well-developed transportation network.

Port of Guangzhou is the leading coastal hub port in South China with a 400 km coastline and a 173 km navigational channel, covering the harbor limits from Guangzhou municipality to the adjacent cities of Dongguan, Zhongshan, Shenzhen, and Zhuhai alongside the Pearl River or on waters. In addition, Port of Guangzhou possesses 6 port operation areas, i.e., Inner Port Area, Huangpu Area Port, Xingang Area Port, Xinsha Area Port, Nansha Area Port and Outer Humen Port and has over 557 berths, among which 50 berths are over 10 thousand DWT berthing capacity.

Port of Guangzhou is the largest trading port in Southern China, connecting with more than 100 domestic ports in China and more than 350 foreign ports in over 80 countries and regions. In 2005, the volume of cargos handled was over 250 million tons while the volume of containers handled over 4.68 million TEU.

The Port Functions

Guangzhou Port Authority is the port administrative department under the Guangzhou Municipal People's Government. It exercises administration over ports, waterway transportation and channels in accordance with the laws and regulations, and conducts uniform management on Guangzhou Port Channels, pilot, anchorage, communication and dispatching.

The branches of Guangzhou Port Authority include Sea Port Management Department, Inland Port Management Department, Panyu Management Department, Wuhe Management Department, Zengcheng Management Department, Xintang Management Department. Organizations under Guangzhou Port Authority are Guangzhou Port Construction Engineering Quality Supervision Station, Guangzhou Port Communication Dispatching Command Center and etc.

Port of Guangzhou is the transfer port of resources and raw materials and the collecting and distribution center of petroleum, coal, grain and some other important materials in Pearl River Delta. Petroleum, coal and grain are the most basic resources by which a regional economy can develop.
