Advantageous Geographical Location
Port of Shanghai is situated at the middle of the 18,000km-long Chinese coastline, where the Yangtse River, known as “the Golden Waterway”, flows into the sea. It is the leading port in the T-shaped waterway network composed by the Yangtse River and the coastline, and is also China’s largest comprehensive port and one of the country’s most important gateways for foreign trade.

It is faced towards the northern and southern coastal seas of China and the oceans of the world, and is linked with the Yangtse River and the inland waterways of Yangtse River Valley region such as Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui provinces etc. Expressway and state-level highways lead the Port to the national highway network to all regions of the country.

Vast Economic Hinterlands
Port of Shanghai serves vast hinterland in the Yangtse River Delta and the entire Yangtse River valley.The Yangtse River Delta is home to a cluster of cities which are the most economically vibrant area in China. The Jianghan Plain and Sichuan Basin are areas that are densely populated and have a developed agriculture and a strong industrial base. These areas will prove to be the powerhouse for the sustainable growth of the Port of Shanghai.

The annual import and export trade through Shanghai, in terms of value, accounts for a quarter of China’s total foreign trade. The Port’s container throughput in 2006 reached 21.71 million TEUs, ranking it the third largest container port in the world for three years running.

Container liner services from the Port of Shanghai cover all major ports around the world. More than 2,000 container ships depart from the Port every month, en route to North America, Europe, the Mediterranean, Persian Gulf, Red Sea, Black Sea, Africa, Australia, Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, and other regions.

Partner Ports

On the principle of “learning from others’ strength through friendly exchanges”, the Group has conducted extensive cooperation with the ports worldwide so as to seek for complementary advantages. Experiences in operation and management learned from foreign ports will be used to push on the overall strategy as well as production, operation and management of the Group. Of late years, the exchanges with foreign partner ports have gradually turned from courtesy contacts to business cooperation. In addition to maintaining the business and technological exchanges with the Port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands, the Port of Hamburg, Germany, the Port of London, UK, the Port of Nagoya and the Port of Hakata, Japan, etc., the Group has signed new memorandums of understanding on cooperation one after another with Georgia Ports Authority, U.S.A., Port of Barcelona, Spain and Port of Seattle, U.S.A., agreeing to launch cooperation and exchanges in the field of port operation, administration and marketing.

Port Services

Port Services unit is a supplementary business of SIPG to support the rapid growth of the Group’s core business. The improvement and expansion of the service functions is geared to enhance the Group’s operational capability of vertical integration, optimize port service, and improve port efficiency. Currently, the port-related services unit include six main categories, namely, pilotage, towage, tally, agency and port information technology service.

Container Terminals

Container terminal operation is a core business of SIPG. There are three major container port areas, namely Wusongkou, Waigaoqiao and Yangshan in the Port. In the past five years, the container throughput of the Port of Shanghai increased from the 6.43 million TEUs recorded in 2001 to 21.71 million TEUs in 2006.
