Kalmar Industries, part of Cargotec Corporation, has made an agreement to supply eleven of its E-One+ rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes to Gateway Terminals India (GTI) at Nhava Sheva, India. This latest order, delivery of which will commence in January 2009, follows on from a contract to supply GTI with 29 E-One RTGs delivered in 2006.
Maximizing machine uptime remains paramount to GTI, so this latest order for 7+1 wide and 1-over-6 high cranes will be equipped with a variety of Kalmar's productivity-enhancing automation software. The units will feature Kalmar's Smartrail®, an automatic steering and container position verification system; Remote Monitoring Interface (RMI), a tool for remote machine monitoring, maintenance tasking and reporting; and Fleetview, which enables control room staff to monitor the real-time positioning and efficient control of each machine.
GTI's commitment to deploying smart, efficient and dependable terminal solutions was apparent in the initial planning of its terminal operations in India. As with the original units ordered, the RTGs for GTI will be fitted with Kalmar's FULL CONTROL®, an all-electric load stability control system to prevent both primary and secondary sway. In contrast, the new units will not only differ in size from those supplied under the earlier contract but will also feature variable speed generators (VSG) for further fuel saving and reduced emissions. VSG systems optimise engine use by determining whether the crane needs increased power for heavy lifts or little power when idling.
The Port of Jawaharlal Nehru located at Nhava Sheva was created to add capacity in the Mumbai region and currently handles 65 percent of the container traffic in India. GTI is the largest of the three container terminals operating in the port.
The terminal has a stated capacity of 1.3 million TEU and runs with modern equipment. It has eight post Panamax twin pick cranes with an 18-wide outreach, 29 Kalmar E-One RTGs, three rail-mounted gantry cranes, reachstackers, empty handlers and a fleet of tractor trailers. The container terminal employs state of the art information technology systems to increase productivity.
GTI reaches out to the needs of the trading community adding the much-required terminal capacity for customers both in the Mumbai region and the rail connected northern hinterland. GTI is a joint venture between APM Terminals and Container Corporation of India (CONCOR).
