Northport invited to assist Congo port development

EXPERTS from Malaysia's Northport have been invited by Congo transport minister Emile Qussoo to share their experience of transforming their deep-water port, which is part of Port Klang, from a public entity to a private commercial one.

"We are truly impressed with the state-of-the-art infrastructure, excellent world-class facilities and services which have attracted so many global shipping lines to Northport," said Mr Qussoo in a Northport communique.

The minister, who visited Northport with 30 officials from the Congo (Brazzaville), said the Malaysian container port could offer important expertise to benefit ports in the African republic.

Mr Qussoo said that in the light of the various successes achieved by Northport, he would like to invite the port's operating company (Northport Berhad), to provide assistance and technical know-how in the development of Port Mandingo Kayes, about 40 kilometres from Pointe-Noire Port.

The managing director and CEO of Northport Bhd, Basheer Hassan Abdul Kader, who briefed the Congolese minister and his delegation, welcomed the invitation for technical collaboration between Pointe-Noire and Northport.

"We would be happy to provide and share our own experiences to make Pointe-Noire a modern gateway port of Congo," said the Northport CEO.
