Under new EU legislation, it will be compulsory from 2011 for all new models of cars and small delivery vans to be fitted with automatic daytime running lights to increase their visibility, reports the Times. The new laws have been introduced as the EU predicts that lights could reduce death and injury on the roads by three to five per cent, but the paper quotes UK centre-right deputy Timothy Kirkhope saying that “There is a concern that drivers start looking out for lights rather than pedestrians and cyclists.”
