KENYA's waterfront system is about start out as digital one that will make Mombasa an e-port by late 2008, reports the Nairobi Daily Nation.
Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) managing director Abdalla Mwaruwa announced waterfront operations will go online early next year.
The Kilindini waterfront project will computerise services and operations at the container terminal so the port can be compliant with the International Ship and Ports Security Code and the aims of the UN's International Maritime Organisation.
The KPA awarded GBP1.61 million (US$3.1 million) to the project's IT tender to begin building software and terminal management for inland container depots.
The KPA has since signed a loan agreement with the Japanese Bank for International Cooperation to build a second container terminal with construction beginning in 2008 and ending in 2015.
