Introduction

As Busan Port is located in the southeast of the Korean peninsula (north latitude 35° 04' 42", east longitude 129° 01' 01"), it plays the role of a gateway connecting the Pacific Ocean and the Asian continent. Also, as the leading port in Korea, it makes a substantial contribution to Korean economic growth by handling about 40% of the total imported and exported overseas cargo, 80% of container cargo, and 40% of the national fishery production.
The number of vessels that use Busan Port totals about 50,000 annually and around 130 vessels every day. The BPA (Busan Port Authority) takes charge of the development, management, and operation of Busan Port. The area managed by the BPA ranges from the southern end of Shinmyung, Myungdong, Jinhae City to the inside area of the port that includes the southeastern end of Udo, the southwestern end of Yeondo, the western end of Chunsoomal, the southern end of Gadukdo, the southern end of Saengdo, the southern end of Oryukdo, the 57m high mountain peak of Dongbaek Island of Haewoondae, and the southern end of Gwangahnri beach resort, as shown on the map. Therefore, it embraces Gamcheon Port, which is a supplementary port to the north harbor of Busan, and Busan Port, Dadaepo Port, and Sooyoung Gulf. In addition, it includes Busan New Port, which is being built at Ilwon, Gaduk Island and is scheduled for completion in 2011.
